INTRODUCTION TO COMPLAINT

Knee pain is a common complaint in primary care. The most common cause is osteoarthritis (OA).

Acute Knee Pain

•The knee is a joint that is frequently injured in weight-bearing sports:

Medial/lateral meniscus injury

–Medial more common than lateral

Medial collateral ligament/lateral collateral ligament (MCL/LCL) injury

–Medial more common than lateral

Anterior cruciate ligament/posterior cruciate ligament (ACL/PCL) injury

–Anterior more common than posterior

•Gout

•Fracture

Chronic Knee Pain

•Common site of OA in population older than 50 years

Uncommon But Not to Be Missed Etiology

•Septic arthritis

•Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

•Malignancy

Consider Mixed Etiology

•Acute injury with OA

•Systemic condition with OA or acute injury

Consider Age of Patients

•Pediatric population:

Osgood–Schlatter disease

Patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee)

Osteochondritis dissecans

Patellar subluxation
